Refugees are seen as a burden where ever they can be and burden weighs much according to the time one lifts it. UNHCR and other NGOs took the responsibility to lift the heavy weight of the refugees all over the world and as the time goes, the fear is that they might no longer be able to sustain the need of the refugees. Uganda hosts more than 1 million refugees today and the number is still increasing. In 2020, it has been declared that every refugee will be in title to get 19,000Ugx (5.9$) per month to sustain their food ratio. 1kg of maize flour costs 1,500Ugx and 1kg of beans costs 2,500Ugxn, a person who is good in math may calculate how many days will this person eats and how many days he will starve waiting for the next distribution to happen. It is clear that we are in the time where refugees must take the responsibility to take charge of themselves with the support of organizations like Unleashed and this where the refugee empowerment comes in.
UNLEASHED (Potentials in Motion) empowers and educate young refugees in potential-discovery, leadership, skill development, and social entrepreneurship to enable refugees and demeaned youth improve their lives and the livelihood of their communities.
Thousands of people flee from their home countries every day to spare their lives and embracing uncertainty in new countries leaving behind all they had. The refugee issue is a serious matter all over the world and mostly in Africa because of political and social-economic instability. Uganda is now a home to 1,1 million of refugees according to UNHCR with 75% unemployment of young Ugandans which makes obvious the high % of unemployment for the refugees from Congo RD, South Sudan, Burundi, Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Rwanda who live in Uganda under the support of UNHCR that only provide survival food ratio. On top of lack of jobs, a huge number of young people are not accessing education or other opportunities for their lives and the only hope has been the resettlement, which is a minimal chance that is not guaranteed and can only be accessed by 2% of the refugees. The mindset developed has created unproductivity and a big potential is lost.
The solution as contribution
Unleashed (PiM) gives an opportunity for job creation and sustainability to the youth in the Nakivale refugee settlement by giving them a free learning space where they are empowered to create solutions to their personal and community challenges and enable them to be changemakers of their lives and their communities with the slogan:
"I am the change I want to see”
Our approach of empowerment is divided into 3:
- Personal development
- Social business Incubation
- Social business acceleration
Nakivale has 28 villages in 3 zones with Basecamp at the center where UNLEASHED is located and Uganda has 7 refugee settlement with urban refugees in Kampala and Mbarara. Looking at the impact UNLEASHED has created for the youth at Basecamp, we envision to reach other zones within Nakivale and scale to other refugee settlement and rural communities. We believe refugees know best their problems and for this cause, they will also best solve them if they are given support.
